If you love Instagram, and in particular beautifully shot imagery of destinations from around the world, there's a pretty good chance you're either following Emilie Ristevski (aka @helloemilie), or have heard of her. This Australian creative and photographer has had an incredible past five years, in which she has amassed a staggering 1.2 million Instagram followers, and this number is still growing.
We caught up with Emilie recently, and below you can read more about her professional background, the beauty regime she follows considering how much she travels, and a few of her favourite places from the past 12 months.
Nude by Nature (NBN): Are you able to let us know about your professional background, photography career, and importance of Instagram for you as a brand.
Emilie: I began studying design and exploring conceptual fine art many years ago. This background really helped shape my photography career. Over the past five years I’ve been a full time creative, photographing and working with clients in the travel and lifestyle space. My distinctive style of imagery has led me to all sides of the world from remote villages in South America to Iceland, Namibia and everywhere in between.
Instagram is such a powerful marketing tool, if used in the right way. One of my favourite things (made possible through Instagram) is definitely discovering and connecting with so many wonderful people. It really does open up a whole new world to discover and connect with people who share similar interests and appreciate your creativity. I feel like I have developed my own little community with people who inspire me every day, including the beautiful insights they share on a daily basis. It has led to so many amazing opportunities, and many of my projects and clients have come about purely through my brand via Instagram.
Nude by Nature (NBN): In your wildest dreams 10 years ago did you think that you’d be doing what you are in 2019, in terms of your career?
Emilie: Absolutely not! The role of social media and the number of careers that have been formed due to social media were not even a possibility 10 years ago. I also never thought photography could end up being a career, as I always imagined being in the design world. Photography was such an intuitive and natural progression, and I’m so grateful I found a place to develop and find my own style over the years.
Nude by Nature (NBN): For any up & coming photographers and content creators, do you have any words of wisdom with regards to forging a successful career.
Emilie: Always stay true to yourself, find your creative voice and be patient. This is the same advice I tell myself today. When I first started my business I had my mind set to always say yes to every opportunity. I think it’s important to learn when to say no. Take the time to know what works for you and be selective to find projects you are passionate about and that will align with your creative vision. Aim to work on things which you relate to and ultimately be able to create what you truly love, without your vision being compromised.
Always remember to find the beauty in every moment.
There are times when working on a new project can be a challenge. Things can often not go as planned, so I’ve learnt how important it is to always make the most of each and every moment. These mishaps can often lead to really valuable lessons, and can even take a project to somewhere even more beautiful than originally planned.
Nude by Nature (NBN): Do you have any thoughts about where you see influencer marketing heading in the next couple of years?
Emilie: It is surreal to think how fast things can change especially when involving social media. There has been such an influx of new creators recently it is really hard to know what will be next. I hope there is a shift to more responsible and sustainable marketing and more individual creative outlets. I find there is a lot of the repetitiveness currently on social media, so I would love a new platform to reconnect and focus on creativity and sharing inspiring new messages.
Nude by Nature (NBN): Do you have any tips that you can share with regards to maintaining your beauty regime when you travel so much?
Emilie: Staying hydrated as much as possible! Travelling can be so harsh and drying on your skin; stuck in airports plus constantly breathing artificial and polluted air. I always try to keep my skincare as natural and hydrating as possible. There has been a lot of trial and error to find what works best for my skin over the years and I have simplified my skincare routine enough to still maintain the essentials no matter where I am in the world – a hydrating face mist, nurturing face oil and protective sunscreen are some of my absolute must haves when travelling.
Nude by Nature (NBN): What are your favourite Nude by Nature products, and why?
Nude by Nature (NBN): Are you able to share a few of your favourite Instagram accounts, that you religiously follow, and why.
Emilie: I love discovering accounts that have a unique perspective. There is an endless amount of creative people I love to follow who inspire me on a daily basis. These are some of my favourites; they all have such a beautifully unique way to tell stories: @madalenatavares, @dreamgaia, @shadowontherun, @ellemaywatson and @lucylaucht.
Nude by Nature (NBN): You're on the go traveling all the time. In the last 12 months, what have been a couple of the favourite places that you’ve visited?
Emilie: It’s so hard to narrow down to just a couple of my favourite places, although New Zealand will always hold a special place in my heart. Namibia and Peru were also two of the most incredible places I’ve had the chance to experience in the last 12 months.
Nude by Nature (NBN): How about your own travel bucket list? Do you have any destinations that you're really keen to visit?
Emilie: We live in such a beautifully diverse world and there are so many hidden landscapes and incredible cultures I would love to discover. There is something about the unknown and realising how little we understand about this world that continues to inspire me. My goal this year is to travel less, although more meaningfully to allow myself to focus on projects that are close to my heart. Next month I have the opportunity to explore Greenland, a special place I have always dreamt of ticking off my bucket list.
Nude by Nature (NBN): Final question! Do you have a favourite quote or phrase that motivates and inspires you in your daily life?
Emilie: I have a long list of quotes I love to read often for inspiration. One of my favourites for many years is the following:
“Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul”.
